Romeo Y Julieta Cigars

Romeo y Julieta (Romeo and Juliet) is a brand of Cuban cigars classified in the middle (medio alto) of the brand pyramid by Habanos S.A. company that markets it.

The brand Romeo y Julieta was founded in Havana in 1875 by two Spanish Inocensio Alvarez Rodriguez and José Manin Garcia. They set up their factory rue San Rafael, then rue Belascoin.

Thirty years later, it is bought by José Rodriguez, known as “Don Pepin”. It develops especially the image of the brand, dedicated to the export, and buys, for example, the Palace of Capuletà Verona and installs a shop of cigars there.

During the first half of the twentieth century, Romeo y Julieta specialized in figurado, cigar shaped, tapered at both ends, which fell into disuse after World War II and will only be resurrected in the 1990s with the brand Cuaba, whose cigars are rolled by Romeo y Julieta.

At the same time, Romeo y Julieta specializes in the creation of “personalized” rings, allowing amateurs, rich or less rich, to have cigars ringed in his name. It is said that the brand has produced nearly 20,000 different rings during its existence.

Today, Romeo y Julieta is the second largest Cuban brand in the world (16.2% of the market in 2001), behind Montecristo.
